Being connected with several of the largest and thoroughly reliable book-publishing firms, I am in a position to arrange that you shall get a royalty of about 15% on your new novel, if you send me either a copy or proofsheets of the manuscript, so that I could translate the novel and have it published here at the same time it is published in Russia. In that case alone can the translation be copyrighted in this country. If necessary, I should be glad to furnish to you the most reliable references either through the Russian or the American consul. I write this note in the hope that you will look upon my suggestion in the proper light and I beg to assure you that your interests will be properly represented. As to the translation, I can promise you that it will be done carefully, conscientiously, thoroughly. I have already translated a number of your short stories, such as “The Incased Man”, and “The Peasants”, also Tolstoy’s “Ressurection” and Gorky’s “Foma Gordeyev”, a copy of which has been forwarded to you by current mail. I am also writing original stories. You would greatly oblige me by sending me a brief outline or synopsis of your new novel.
