There is so much sincerity and a broad embrace of life, I may say, the very life of life in your little masterpieces that they rise so strikingly above the general literature of any land today, my appeal to both the heart of the man and the mind of the artist. A Russian myself, I know the atmosphere of your productions and, with your permission, I would take the pleasure of serving the English-speaking people with a very careful translation of a volume of stories most characteristic and representative of your writings. I know the task is hard, but love and beauty are their own best rewards. I think that “Дуэль”, “Мужики”, “Палата № 6”, “Скрипка Ротшильда” и “Спать хочется” would make an ideal volume of stories. This is but my suggestion. I wish I knew your opinion as to the choice of material for such a volume. I understand that considerable changes have been made in the edition published in Russia, and I have no doubt <2 нрзб. > the interest of the work will be greatly enhanced by a faithful translation from the original manuscript. I spent some time in Russia during the late famine as representative of philanthropists in America, cooperating with the Tolstoi-family.
