My dear Mr. Chekhov, Your stories have so impressed me with their truthfulness to life, with their artistic perfection of execution, their beauty and strength, that my admiration for your works has of late grown into worship. Pardon my frankness for it is the truth. I have worshiped you as the Master of the short-story of our time. There is so much sincerity and a broad embrace of life, I may say, the very life of life in your little masterpieces that they rise so strikingly above the general literature of any land today, my appeal to both the heart of the man and the mind of the artist. A Russian myself, I know the atmosphere of your productions and, with your permission, I would take the pleasure of serving the English-speaking people with a very careful translation of a volume of stories most characteristic and representative of your writings.
