Часть текста: twenty years, however, the theory of speech genres has been developed mainly in the field of linguistics, where the principal object of study is not literary language. Drawing upon the work of linguists, this Bakhtinian critical study has therefore been undertaken with the goal of “returning” speech theory to the study of literature. A new typology of speech genres is presented that seeks to unite Bakhtin’s theory with Roman Jakobson’s model of communication and the functions of language. This thesis contends that authors understand the nature of communication in different ways, a specificity that can be extended to literary movements or even to whole cultural epochs. My hypothesis has been examined in relation to Chekhov’s understanding of communication, as it is revealed in his texts, together with that of some of his predecessors in classical Russian literature (Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky). Studies of communication in Chekhov have, in general, been limited to single stories and plays, or to a small sample of his work. As you are no doubt aware that there is no such a thing as a mutual agreement between Russia and the United States as to copyright protection, the American publishers have a legal right to publish translations from the Russian without any remuneration to the author of the original. Being connected with several of the largest and thoroughly reliable book-publishing firms, I am in a position to arrange that you shall get a royalty of about 15% on your new novel, if you send me either a copy or proofsheets of the manuscript, so that I could translate the novel and have it published here at the same time it is published in Russia. In that case alone can the translation be copyrighted in this country. If necessary, I should be glad to furnish to you the most reliable references either through the Russian or the American consul. I write this note in the hope that you will look upon my suggestion in the proper light and I beg to assure you that your interests will be properly represented. As to the translation, I can promise you that it will be done carefully, conscientiously, thoroughly. В 30-х годах и позже — в 40-х — они эпизодически появлялись на страницах английской газеты "Нью стейтсмен энд нейшн", американского журнала "Голдн бук мэгэзин" и других 133 . Однако юмористические рассказы Чехова не давались английским переводчикам. Примером тому может служить первая и до 1975 г. 134 единственная попытка собрать юморические рассказы Чехова под одной обложкой — сборник "Девять юморесок" в переводе И. Гольдберга и Г. Т. Шниткинд, выпущенный в 1918 г. в Нью-Йорке 135 . Сборник включал ряд уже переводившихся на английский язык рассказов и четыре — "Месть", "То была она", "Неосторожность" и "Пассажир 1-го класса" (озаглавленный "Такова слава!" — "Such is fame!"), — которые были представлены по-английски впервые. Два последних, правда, впоследствии вошли в гарнетовское собрание. В кратком предисловии переводчиков к сборнику Чехов-юморист сравнивался с О'Генри. Различие между двумя новеллистами составители сборника видели лишь в некотором несходстве композиционных принципов: "Многие чеховские рассказы, — писали они, — напоминают картину без рамы — безграничный русский простор, в рассказах же О'Генри обрамление часто важнее...
